3. Symptoms of Lily Toxicity
If a cat has been exposed to a lily, symptoms can begin within a few hours. Early signs may include:
- Vomiting
- Drooling
- Loss of appetite
- Low energy or weakness
As the toxins begin to affect the kidneys, additional signs may appear:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Later, very little or no urination
These symptoms require immediate veterinary attention. Waiting even a few hours can make treatment more difficult.
4. Other Toxic Plants Cat Owners Should Avoid
Lilies are the most dangerous, but many other plants can also cause serious illness in cats. Some cause mouth irritation, while others can affect the heart, liver, or nervous system.
Examples of highly toxic plants include:
- Oleander
- Sago palm
- Foxglove
- Rhododendron
- Dieffenbachia
Moderately toxic plants include:
- Peace lily
- Philodendron
- Pothos
- Aloe vera (the gel is safe, but the plant itself is not)
- Snake plant
If you are unsure about a plant, it is safer to avoid it or check a reliable pet safety database before bringing it home.
