Your skin is your body's largest organ—and it's also one of its most honest communicators. Before internal issues become serious, your skin often sends subtle signals that something needs attention.
Your skin whispers before your body shouts. Here's what different skin changes might be telling you.
Before We Start: Normal Variations vs. Warning Signs
Everyone's skin has quirks—freckles, moles, dry patches, occasional blemishes. Normal variations aren't cause for concern.
When to pay attention: Changes that are new, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms.
1. Persistent Yellowish Tint (Jaundice)
What it looks like: Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. May be subtle at first—often noticed first in the eyes.
What it may mean:
Liver issues (hepatitis, cirrhosis)
Gallbladder problems
Pancreatic concerns
When to worry: If accompanied by dark urine, pale stools, or abdominal pain.
What to do: See a doctor promptly. This warrants blood work.
2. Dark, Velvety Patches (Acanthosis Nigricans)
What it looks like: Dark, thickened, velvety skin in body folds—neck, armpits, groin. Looks like it needs washing but doesn't scrub off.
What it may mean:
Insulin resistance
Prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
