But there’s an even more serious consequence that happens long before the carousel. The handler revealed that dangling straps, ribbons, and loose accessories are a major red flag during the baggage screening process.
“The X-ray machines and CT scanners used for checked luggage create a 3D image for security analysts. A strange, dense, linear object wrapped around the handle—which is exactly what a ribbon or strap looks like on the inside—can obscure the contents of the bag or, more alarmingly, resemble a trigger mechanism or binding.”
This triggers a Security Resolution alert. Your bag is automatically pulled from the line. A team must then physically locate it, transport it to a secure screening room, open it, and swab the contents for explosives. This invasive search not only risks damaging your locks and zippers but also almost guarantees your bag will miss its intended flight.
“You might be enjoying a pre-flight coffee while your bag is being taken apart because a pink polka-dot ribbon looked suspicious under an X-ray,” the handler says.
